Linocut: Typo Tree

Linocut tree words

Linocut approx. 5x5.5 inches, hand printed with Schmincke water-based ink on Daler-Rowney 95gsm sketchbook paper.

I had thought this linocut would be titled something along the lines of “Word Tree” but “Typo Tree” is more accurate. I’m not pointing out where… Ironically, I drew the lettering on the lino before I cut it, so I’m calling it was fate rather than illiteracy.

Question: Do you read the bottom line as “soil, root, soil” or as “soil, roots, oil”? I intended the former, but I see it as the latter.

Texture in the ink in the ‘background’ created by rubbing a finger into the ink after applying it to the whole linocut with a roller.

  1. I see soil-root-soil. And I spotted the typo. Art should never be ‘perfect’. I hear every page of the London A-Z has a very small mistake on it so I can check if someone copies their work without permission.
