Minch Monoprints

In Highland Print Studio, Monoprints/Monotypes, Printmaking on 14 June 2011 at 08:26

Saturday saw me at the Highland Print Studio for a day’s monoprinting class, led by Brian MacBeath. We did three-colour monoprints, using yellow, red, and blue ink with a piece of thin perspex serving as the plate. Extender was mixed into the oil-based relief ink to make it more transparent.

My first print (bottom photo) was created yellow, red, then blue; my second print (top photo) was created by running the blue through the press again, thus printing a light blue, then red and finally yellow. Having seen how strong the blue and red printed, I used less ink on the plate the second time for a subtler result. Though you don’t see much of it in places, I did ink the yellow edge to edge on the plate, to help create a unity in the composition.

I was pleased with both, though the second one is my favourite. The colours are less brash, the overall effect gentler.

  1. What lovely prints

  2. Thank you! The one of the top is a favourite of mine (and one I’ve kept for myself!).
